BASELINE ASSESSMENT FOR PROTRACTED RELIEF & RECOVERY OPERATIONS (PRRO) 2013 â€“ 2015
United Nation World Food Programme (UNWFP) is in the planning phase of implementing a three years intervention in relation to Relief and Recovery Operations in different districts of Pakistan. Before starting this intervention, WFP decided to have a benchmark regarding food security situation of those selected districts and for this purpose a baseline assessment was planned and announced. SDF submitted its proposal for the said baseline assessment and won this bid. Now, SDF has entered into an agreement with United Nation’s World Food Programme (UNWFP) to carry out this assessment in fourty districts of Pakistan including FATA and AJ&K.
FOOD SECURITY ANALYSIS 2012 (FSA) PRIMARY DATA COLLECTION (PHASE - I)
Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) and United Nation World Food Programme have been used to work together for analysing food security situation of Pakistan. Both these organizations produced two very comprehensive and consolidated reports on food insecurity situation of Pakistan in 2003 & 2009 respectively. After continuous floods in 2010, 11 & 12 Ministry of Food Security and Research on behalf of the Government of Pakistan requested SDPI to furnish the same updated report. SDPI discussed with UNWFP and finalized framework for this updated report whereas UNWFP committed for financial assistance for the same. SDPI engaged SDF to collect secondary data from all districts of Pakistan against agreed indicators. To fill the gaps in secondary data, need for primary data collection was felt and initially seventeen districts of Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa were selected. This primary data collection exercise would be conducted across the country phase wise.
A STUDY TO LINK CLIMATE CHANGE WITH FOOD SECURITY
The Consultative Group of International Agriculture Research (CGIAR) – USA under its programme on “Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS)” has commissioned a study to International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI). The purpose of the study is to “Produce an informative and easily accessible reference on risks due to climate variability and their current and potential impact on food security in Pakistan including a discussion of policy response options for adaptation”.
An alliance of Sustainable Development Foundation (SDF), Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), United Nation World Food Programme (UNWFP) and Consultative Group of International Agriculture Research (CGIAR) has been framed to accomplish this assignment. Third party validattion (TPV) of Basic Education Community Schools (BECS)
Federal Ministry of Education and Training through its “Basic Education Community Schools” (BECS) project is successfully implementing the largest non-formal basic education community schools project in Pakistan, including Azad Jammu &Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). The BECS project is currently operating 14455 Basic Education Community Schools all over Pakistan. It has its Head Office in Islamabad. Its network of offices and associated NGOs is one of the largest in the country which provides a unique opportunity to contribute to education through non-formal approach. Sustainable Development Foundation (SDF) came into an agreement with Ministry of Education and Training to carry out Third Party Validation of Basic Education Community Schools (BECS) those are established under Ministry’s initiatives. BECS intends to improve the quality of education, its efficiency and effectiveness by conducting a third party validation (TPV) exercise. For this purpose BECS invites proposals from reputable Organizations having proven experience in conducting Third Party Validation. SDF is selected to conduct this Third Party Validation in twenty one (21) districts of Balochistan province, twenty one (21) districts of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province and six (6) agencies of FATA.
Empowering the voice of a new generation programme (EVNG)
Sustainable Development Foundation (SDF) is implementing EVNG programme in District Multan through Civil Society Support Programme which is an initiative of United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF). The focus of the programme is to advocate rights of youth through social mobilization. SDF’s team organized seminars, information sharing and dissemination sessions to establish a youth network. Orientation trainings for youngsters were conducted to lobby for democracy. A group of young energetic and motivated people was organized to build leadership and trained as master trainers. An editorial board for young leaders’ newsletter was constituted. The programme supported youth groups in designing and implementation of Social Action Projects. Empowering the Voice of a New Generation programme aimed to provide youth of Pakistan with opportunities to interact with the concerned citizens, political, social and human rights activists, lawyers, writers, researchers, elected representatives and government officials to have discussions and debates on core issues and their cause and effects on the overall society.
Inquiry Based Learning Programme (IBLP)
Sustainable Development Foundation (SDF) has launched Inquiry Based Learning Programme (IBLP) in tehsil Bahawalpur to establish a prototype in quality education. The IBLP is derived through the Department for International Development (DFID)’s Education Innovation Fund of Ilm Ideas Programme which is being managed by Development Alternative Incorporation (DAI), whereas the financial assistance is provided by United Kingdom Agency for International Development (UKaid). Under this programme twenty (20) science teachers of government girls’ elementary/high schools of tehsil Bahawalpur, those are teaching science to grade 8, would be trained on the techniques of Inquiry Based Learning to improve learning outcomes of the students. It will be ensured through on spot monitoring and follow up trainings that teachers are applying this method in the classrooms. On the other hand documentaries on science model making would be created and showcased for students to develop their interest in learning. Each selected school would be provided with the “Learning Box” containing science lab material for grade 8 to carry out experiments on the topics of science text book.
